Red-light contraventions lead to resident furore!

The pedestrian light to rear of this traffic light seems to be facing oncoming vehicles from Lambourne Road rather than pedestrians.

Residents in the vicinity of the Maypole Pub have noticed a dangerous driving practice that has resulted in a number of near misses.

This morning a report on the Chigwell Row Whatsapp group revealed that the impact of the driving malaise is affecting a lot of local people.

The safety concern arises as cars waiting on Lambourne Road opposite the Maypole Pub exit the traffic-lights while the pedestrian signal is green. This has meant that the pedestrians crossing at the time were almost hit by a vehicle, as it set off before it was legal to do so.

Residents have expressed a number of views on the cause for the somewhat regular infraction (though no actual figures have been presented). Some believe it is because of the visibility of the green man sign on the opposite side of the road (which is visibly facing vehicles exiting Lambourne Riad by the Maypole.   A local resident has noticed that vehicles turning right onto Gravel Lane would have to watch the red light on their left (as the light on their right is on a far corner), but might get confused by the green light on Gravel Lane opposite on their right, which is in their sight-of-view.

This may be the main problem with the infringements.

There may even be a few that mistake the green man light signal above as a mistaken authority to drive.

CRRA have now informed the local police of the concern, Essex Highways, and North Essex Parking Partnership of the concern. We have also sent the concern to Cllr Brian Sandler from Epping Forest District Council, Essex County Councillor Gagan Mohindra and to our Parish Clerk Anthony Belgrave and Chairman of Chigwell Parish Pranav Bhanot.  Hopefully this will result in a solution which may simply be a tweaking of the direction of the Gravel Lane pedestrian lights.
