Poor state of roads and pavements in Chigwell is a health hazard - playing children re-enact army assault course training on Coopers Close!

Our quiet Chigwell roads are traversed and played on by children, yet safety has been compromised due to budgetary constraints creating dangerous obstacle courses.

CRRA recently reported a series of potholes on roads intersecting with Lambourne Road.  Disappointingly areas needing repair on Retreat way were ignored because apparently they were not deep enough, whereas a small section of concerns revealed on Raymond Gardens were repaired leaving many areas still below par.

Potholes damage vehicles and tyres and can results in trips and falls, but despite the potential costs to local residents affected by them, many councils place such concerns as low priority.

Essex Highways Department has placed the defects on Retreat Way and the remaining ones on Raymond Gardens, on a to do list.  But have failed to provide a timespan for when these works will be complete.

Essex County Council's analysis of a serious concern differs quite drastically from that of local residents. But that is unfortunately a set of circumstances above our control and we simply must continue to keep reporting road and pavement defects, so that we minimise the impact of the budgetary constraints that form these decisions.

In the meanwhile after three request for help with pothole issues in our ward, CRRA has reported the following road and pavement defects.

Coopers Close reported to Essex Council under Ref: 2687221 and 2687263

My little helper Leah Chowdhry helped identify concerns. She said:
"Daddy can I play on this road if there is a full lockdown - I can pretend to be in the army in World War 1 or 2 fighting for freedom."

It's like walking on the moon with huge craters everywhere.

The entirety of Coopers Close from the junction of Lambourne Road to Faversham Close needs a thorough inspection and CRRA have advised Essex Council about this.

Coopers Close seems to be in competition with many Third World (Developing) countries. We were shocked to see how bad the state of the road was and have reported it to the Parish Council. No resident of Chigwell Row should have to expect this level of road disrepair when the Parish Council has nearly 3 times the recommended General Reserves for a local authority body of its size!

Sunnymede reported to Essex Council under Ref: 2687222

Here at a previous repair made near Millers Lodge you can see that an extremely deep pothole has already formed.  CRRA have asked Essex Highways Department to pursue the contractors involved in the temporary repair for the cost of  reinstatement of the road.  Quite clearly, shoddy workmanship has resulted in a rapid decline of the road surface.

Worse still when the patch up work occurred the contractor has obviously not checked the impact of their work on the surrounding road structure.  They seem to have failed to take their repairs to the extremity of the road, resulting in a crumbling of the edge.  The dangerous defect will cause tyre and vehicle damage to many road users and threatens to be a serious road hazard during the winter months.

Wilson Chowdhry, Chairman of the Chigwell row Residents Association, said:

"This level of negligence is just not good enough.

"An improved inspection process post-completion of road repair work must be established by Essex Highways Department.

"Moreover proven failures by contractors must be penalised with stiff penalties, up to a complete ban for repeat offenders.

"Work proven to be at fault must be compensated for by the contractors.

"Responsibility for reinstatement should not subsumed by Essex Council using innocent tax-payers money."
