Join us on a Dickens trail from 9am on Saturday 5th December

CRRA are organising regular historic visits across the ward and just outside so that we can learn about our local history together and share our findings with others.  Moreover, we hope that a series of informative non-academic postings about Chigwell's colourful past, will inspire our community to engage with our local heritage.

EVENT:  Documenting Dickens

TIME:     9am

DATE:    Saturday 5th December

Some of you will have read about our trip to Durolitum a former roman settlement (click here), Others have read  of our discovery of the lost whereabouts of the eponymous Chig Well (click here)

Equipped with a newly purchased copy of Charles Dickens book titled 'Barnaby Rudge,' we hope to read extracts from the period book, which starts of from our town of Chigwell and even mentions Chigwell Row.

We will then travel to the Charles Dickens Oak and to the Kings Head Inn and will read extracts of the book  and detail other significant history for the Kings Head Inn - now known as Sheesh Bar.

There is some travelling involved and we have limited car space so please advise early if you wish to join us - unless you have a vehicle of your own.  However, we would like to carshare as much as possible.

This will be a day for fun, frolics and a chance to be part of a collection of posts and videos that encourage people to learn more about our ancient past and documents it for posterity.

We get that it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if there are any avid historians, or people simply as imbued with a passion for Chigwell like we at CRRA are,  then this will be a day out for you.

Every first Saturday of each month, we hope to do the same with new topics and we are very open to suggestion.

PS we also hope to clarify the fallacy that Dickens attended the old Maypole and not the current one.  We have evidence that suggests the current building is the one that was in operation during his visits to Chigwell '...the greatest place on earth.'
