As the UK prepares for a second lockdown a wonderful moment of inspiration was seen above Chigwell and Hainault, when a rare beautiful double rainbow dominated our skyline.

It seems many of us were awestruck by the wonder of God's creation or natures beauty, whichever you prefer. 

One of the most memorable comments on the Nextdoor app in response to our previous post, was made by Sue Jay, of Buckhurst Hill.  She wrote:

"I was driving down palmerston road and witnessed it but knew that if I pulled over and stopped to get my phone camera it would be gone.

"It was magical and I am very glad you caught it on camera. Made me glad to be alive."

Today is the last day of freedom for many of us before we enter what will be another difficult lockdown. We hope the gallery of images we display below will inspire some of you, as we again put our trust in the NHS and the many essential workers who will help to maintain us through these unprecedented times.

At the end of our journey, local history buffs congregated under the Dickens Oak. Please join our rapidly growing community facebook page   (click here) On Saturday 5th December 10 people from Chigwell and the surrounding area travelled across the various sites in Chigwell Row and Chigwell Village that had a connection to the world famous author Charles Dickens.  Initially people met just behind the car park of the Maypole pub The tour began at the Dido Oak in Hainault Forest accessible via Sylvan Way.  This is a veteran oak (old but not quite ancient a list of definitions can be found here ) that was once made famous in Tatler Magazine back in 1903, due to an article about the Hermit of Hainault, a man named William Bell otherwise known as Dido who once lived in the forest under the cover of some sackcloth.  In his pocket he carried herbal roots, snakes, newts and anything else he could make money form.  Apparently he used to say: 'They call me Doctor Bell, Bec...

Chigwell derived from King's Well or Cicca's Well the jury is out!

The famous Hainault Forest sheep dip pond where sheep were once brought to drink. Not sure they would now however... Please join our rapidly growing community facebook page  (click here) I received a call from an elderly woman named Anna from Orchard Way last week and we had a long conversation about the history of Chigwell and the need to preserve our history. She was quite fortunate as I am the type of person to take a keen interest in the history of places, though this is for pleasure and not academically.  Besides, when I read about the novelist Charles Dickens's passion for Chigwell, I was naturally intrigued myself.  In a letter to his friend  John Foster, Dickens described Chigwell:  " the greatest place in the world ... Persistent Advocacy Leads to Major Pavement Repairs in Chigwell Row

The residents of Daylop Drive in Chigwell Row have been given a long-overdue morale boost, thanks to the tireless efforts of Chigwee Roww community campaigner Wilson Chowdhry. For months, the condition of the road’s pavement had been steadily deteriorating, making it not only unsightly but also hazardous for pedestrians. Despite the worsening situation, repairs were not forthcoming, until Mr. Chowdhry took the matter into his own hands. Wilson Chowdhry, began documenting the state of the pavement earlier this year. He consistently took photographs of the defects, highlighting cracks, uneven surfaces, and general wear that were becoming more of a risk to residents. Armed with his photographic evidence, Mr. Chowdhry filed repeated complaints with Essex Highways, persistently pressing for action. His tenacity did not stop there; he even arranged to meet Council officers directly on Daylop Drive, showing them firsthand the poor condition of the pavement and pressing for immediate repairs. ...
