Parish Councillor resigns! If we want a proper election 10 local Chigwell Village residents must write in to Epping Returning Officer

A notice has been registered on the Chigwell Parish Council website which highlights the resignation of Cllr Darsham Sunger and calls for at least 10 letters from the local community should residents seek an election for a new councillor.  If 10 letters are not received then a candidate will simply be chosen by the majority party, which locally is the Conservatives.  Several of our members have asked us to post this story, to ensure that a democratic process is followed with regards to the filling of this vacancy.

The notice reads as follows:

NOTICE OF VACANCY
Chigwell Parish Council
Chigwell Village Ward

Notice is hereby given that a vacancy has occurred in the office of the Parish Councillor due to the resignation of Cllr Darshan Sunger.

An election to fill the vacancy will be held if notice in writing of a request for such an election is made by ten Local Government electors from the Chigwell Village Ward of Chigwell Parish Council. are and received by the Returning Officer of Epping Forest DC at the Civic Offices., High Street, Epping, CM16 4BZ by no later than 9th November 2020. 

If an election is requested, under the provisions of the Coronavirus Act 2020 and The Local Government and Police and Crime Commissioner (Coronavirus) (Postponement of Elections and Referendums) (England and Wales) Regulations 2020 the election will not take place, and the vacancy will be held open until it is filled at the Ordinary Election of Councillors due to be held on Thursday 6th May 2021.

If an election is not requested by ten Local Government electors as detailed above . the vacancy will be filled by the Parish Council as soon as practicable after the expiry of the date given above.

For those of you who may want to have a more democratic process you must get your responses in by 9th November 2020.

If you are happy to just go with the flow and trust the current elected members of the Parish Council to choose internally you have to do nothing.

This is the only way to preserve  the strength of our local democratic process.

Justice Unveiled: Preliminary Proceedings in the Hainault Sword Attack Trial

During a brief preliminary hearing at the Old Bailey concerning the tragic 5-person sword attack in Hainault resulting in the death of 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin, it was decided that a full trial would convene on February 3, 2025. Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, the defendant, was escorted into the courtroom by a police officer and court official, appearing aloof and distant behind a partition of glass.
