Crime Prevention Advice – Top Tips

Vehicle theft

·        Invest in a security (faraday) pouch for your key fob and spares, if you have a keyless vehicle, to assist with blocking the signal.

·        Activate any vehicle tracker systems where applicable.

·        Consider use of a steering wheel lock or security box which can be fitted over the pedals, when the vehicle is parked up.

Burglary

·        Illusion of occupancy – give the impression that somebody is inside the property by leaving the TV or a light on. A timer could be purchased to assist with lighting.

·        Ensure all doors and windows are closed and double locked upon leaving the house, or the room.

·        Keep sheds securely looked and consider property marking any valuables inside.

·        Don’t leave anything in the garden, or around the boundaries, which might assist with gaining entry e.g. wheelie bins near to the fence, tools etc.

·        For the post-Christmas period, ensure not to leave packaging from valuable gifts in plain sight, advertising what you may have inside. Fold the packing up inside or out or put them inside another non-descript box.

Theft from motor vehicle

·        Always ensure your vehicle is double locked.

·        Don’t leave any valuables in plain sight, including loose change and sunglasses.

·        Protect your catalytic converter – consider your parking options carefully; don’t park half on the kerb allowing easy access to the underneath of your vehicle, park in a garage where possible, or in a well lit and populated area. You could also invest in a protective clamp for your exhaust.

·        Make your items less attractive through property marking.
